Durable agent workflows: Temporal, Inngest, and the effect that survived a retry

The deliverable is a step-to-effect journal for a multi-step task.

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Evaluate durable workflow completion at the level of the intended business effects, not just a resumed process. Temporal and Inngest document execution workflows to inspect in current sources. YieldGate offers a separate fictional explanation preview. Retrying or resuming a step can preserve progress while leaving an external result uncertain. The team must know which work happened, what may repeat, and what evidence closes the complete task.

Define the decision before the tool

By YieldGate / OraXLabs. We publish this guide and own YieldGate. Official public sources were observed October 31, 2026. This AI-assisted documentation analysis reports no hands-on comparison, private customer data, installed connection, or measured outcome. Vendor roles come from the linked material; the acceptance map and fictional example are our recommendations. Inclusion does not imply vendor affiliation or endorsement.

The deliverable is a step-to-effect journal for a multi-step task. This differs from webhook delivery, which concerns an event reaching an endpoint. A durable workflow may continue after that event and coordinate several effects. Its execution history is useful only when those effects are reconciled with the user-visible outcome.

Temporal

Temporal official source describes workflows whose running state is durable, with recovery, replay, and pause behavior. It distinguishes Activities for failure-prone interactions and lists retries and task queues. These are execution-model capabilities, not a finding that an external effect in your application is safe to repeat.

Ask how the intended workflow records progress and resumes after a failure. Then identify the external action whose completion matters to the buyer. Do not infer a guarantee about that action from general durable-execution language.

Inngest

Inngest official source describes durable execution using functions organized into steps, including pause, fan-out, defer, and retry behavior. Its event-driven role is relevant to a multi-step task. We do not convert that capability description into a promise of exactly one external effect or a complete buyer outcome.

Ask which steps are retried or resumed and how the proposed application handles an uncertain external result. Inspect configured behavior, not an assumption that every repeated function is harmless.

YieldGate: inspect a fictional explanation separately

Our public conversation preview offers a manual wording exercise. Choose “Use a fictional example” for editable PDF export, start when available, and ask: “In a fictional PDF-export workflow, a file may have been created before a timeout. What must be checked before retrying and claiming the whole task finished?” Treat the invented conditions in the question as a synthetic exercise, not facts about the sample or a real account. Inspect any reply against the supplied limits.

We inspected the public instructions without starting a trial, generating examples, or submitting a model question. YieldGate is not connected to the tools discussed here and does not perform their operations in this exercise. No installation, checkout, or product trial is activated.

A fictional export is created before its acknowledgment is lost

Imagine an invented workflow that creates an editable PDF, stores it, and sends a notification. The create step produces a file, but its acknowledgment is lost before progress is recorded in the mock history. A later attempt resumes the task. No Temporal or Inngest workflow, file, or message was executed.

Repeating create without reconciling the first effect may produce a second file. That can be harmless only if the application’s declared behavior makes it so; the word retry does not decide it. The journal should identify the intended export and the evidence needed to determine whether it already exists.

Even after file creation is reconciled, notification remains a separate step. The full task might be defined as a usable file available to the buyer, or it might also require a confirmed notification. Specify that stopping condition before reporting success. A technically completed run is not automatically the agreed user outcome.

Evaluate one case and its changed state

  1. Define one multi-step synthetic task and the user-visible result that closes it.
  2. Mark each external effect and whether repetition is safe under the proposed application contract.
  3. Ask a demonstrator to show failure before an effect, uncertain acknowledgment after an effect, and later resumption.
  4. Reconcile the intended effect before repeating it; retain pending or partial outcomes rather than inventing completion.
  5. Inspect the final reply against the complete task record, including outputs that remain unavailable.

Choose the evidence needed next

Choose durable execution infrastructure for the progress and recovery model your task requires. Verify external effect semantics in the application separately. A manual preview can explain a fictional partial state; it cannot execute, resume, deduplicate, or confirm the actual workflow.
