AI fallback policies: PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway, LiteLLM, and the answer contract

The deliverable is a fallback decision table tied to the required answer.

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Evaluate fallback behavior against the response contract, not merely whether another request returns text. The current Portkey page identifies PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway; LiteLLM documents gateway and SDK capabilities including fallbacks. YieldGate offers a separate fictional explanation preview. A fallback can change the provider, model, capabilities, or context handling involved. Decide which changes are acceptable and how an exhausted or incompatible route is reported.

Define the decision before the tool

By YieldGate / OraXLabs. We publish this guide and own YieldGate. Official public sources were observed October 31, 2026. This AI-assisted documentation analysis reports no hands-on comparison, private customer data, installed connection, or measured outcome. Vendor roles come from the linked material; the acceptance map and fictional example are our recommendations. Inclusion does not imply vendor affiliation or endorsement.

The deliverable is a fallback decision table tied to the required answer. This differs from investigating a slow production incident: a trace can show what happened, while the policy must decide which alternate behavior is allowed before the incident occurs. Continuity is useful only when the alternate path preserves the constraints that make the reply acceptable.

PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway (Portkey)

PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway (Portkey) official source currently says Portkey is now PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway. The same page describes gateway, observability, governance, and orchestration roles. We use the current name and do not infer specific fallback triggers or compatibility behavior from this overview; those remain questions for the proposed configuration.

Ask which conditions activate a fallback in the proposed configuration and which request properties are preserved. Do not infer a universal trigger or compatibility rule from the existence of a fallback feature.

LiteLLM

LiteLLM official source describes an AI gateway and an SDK offering a common response format across providers. Its SDK overview explicitly lists retries and fallbacks. That establishes a relevant capability category, not that every alternate model preserves your answer contract or that your intended gateway configuration is active.

Ask how the intended route handles a model that lacks a required response capability. Inspect terminal failure as well as an available alternate model. A successful transport response should not quietly relax a required output condition.

YieldGate: inspect a fictional explanation separately

Our public conversation preview offers a manual wording exercise. Choose “Use a fictional example” for editable PDF export, start when available, and ask: “In a fictional PDF-export conversation, the fallback returns prose but cannot confirm the required answer structure. Can you call the request fully successful?” Treat the invented conditions in the question as a synthetic exercise, not facts about the sample or a real account. Inspect any reply against the supplied limits.

We inspected the public instructions without starting a trial, generating examples, or submitting a model question. YieldGate is not connected to the tools discussed here and does not perform their operations in this exercise. No installation, checkout, or product trial is activated.

State what the fallback may change

An original acceptance record, not vendor-default fields or reported test results.
Decision recordPreserveFailure to expose
TriggerThe observed condition that permits another routeEvery error is retried through any available model.
InvariantRequired facts, instructions, output shape, and tool boundaryThe alternate answer loses a material constraint.
Allowed changeApproved provider or model change and known limitationA new data path is introduced without review.
Terminal stateWhat happens when no compatible route remainsA fabricated success hides an unresolved request.

A fictional export answer needs a specific structure

Imagine an invented sales assistant that must answer from a fixed product packet and return a supported explanation plus an explicit unknown field. The primary route becomes unavailable. A proposed alternate route can return prose but its required structured-output behavior has not been established. No gateway, provider, or model request was run.

Returning readable prose may improve availability while violating the application’s acceptance contract. The team should decide whether a separately reviewed prose path exists or whether the request remains unresolved. It should not describe a format mismatch as a fully successful answer merely because text arrived.

Also retain the evidence packet and authority boundary. A fallback must not invent a purchase link or execute an export action that the original route could only explain. The alternate path’s capabilities and limits need their own supported review before a production commitment.

Evaluate one case and its changed state

  1. Write the answer invariants and terminal behavior before choosing alternate routes.
  2. Ask the gateway evaluator to show the actual trigger and route selected for a synthetic failure.
  3. Introduce an incompatible response capability or missing input and inspect whether the intended policy preserves the constraint.
  4. Record route changes and unresolved results without reporting any new provider as equivalent by default.
  5. Review a buyer-facing explanation of the failure separately from gateway execution; a preview cannot verify runtime routing.

Choose the evidence needed next

Choose a gateway for the routing control your application needs, then validate the policy’s semantics. A returned answer is not automatically an acceptable answer. Use a manual preview for wording around a fictional failure, not proof of resilience, latency, or provider equivalence.

Sources & scope
